PTI offers a number of resources for both practicing professionals and for university programs geared to engineering, architecture and construction management as explained further below.
University Educational Resources
PTI's Education Committee is currently developing a prototype course curriculum that may be used as is or adapted to teach post-tensioning concepts to engineering and architecture students. The course materials will include lecture notes, sample examination problems and related audiovisual materials.
The curriculum is being readied for possible use in the 2008 - 2009 term. Interested professors shouldcontact PTIto request the curriculum and course materials when available. Specific requests for course support will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Professional Educational Resources
PTI is committed to providing top quality continuing education for engineers and related professionals. PTI holds more than 50 seminars and workshops each year along with a technical conference. These training opportunities focus on a wide variety of post-tensioning application.
PTI offers Continuing Education Units (convertible to PDHs) to assist professionals in meeting local requirements for license renewal. PTI is a American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education Systems (CES) Registered Provider.

Each year, PTI regularly schedules several dates for the popular Analysis and Design of Post-Tensioned Building Structures as well as their Fundamentals of Post-Tensioning: Design, Analysis and Construction seminars. Click here to see the latest schedule of seminars.
Analysis and Design of Post-Tensioned Building Structures
(8 PDH/0.8 CEU credits)
The Analysis and Design of Post-Tensioned Building Structures seminar was developed for engineers and designers actively involved in post-tensioning design. The full-day in-depth workshop will include hands-on training on the analysis and design of new post-tensioned building structures and will cover the following aspects in the design of post-tensioned structures:
Preliminary Design: Factors that affect the selection of structural systems will be discussed. The presentation will focus on key aspects and steps involved in the analysis and design of post-tensioned structures. Important code provisions relating to the design of post-tensioned structures will be highlighted.
Detailed Analysis and Design: Effective techniques for modeling of one- and two- way slabs will be presented. Detailed examples of common types of structural systems will be discussed using hand calculations as well as commonly used software. Hands-on exercises of practical situations will be used to explain the basic concepts.
Detailing and Structural Drawings: Causes of restraint and ways of mitigating problems arising from restraint will be discussed. The workshop will also cover common mistakes that are seen on structural drawings and solutions to common design/construction situations.
Fundamentals of Post-Tensioning: Design, Analysis and Construction(4 PDH/0.4 CEU credits)
The Fundamentals of Post-Tensioning: Design, Analysis, and Construction session focuses on analysis, design and construction fundamentals, with an emphasis on post-tensioned buildings. The seminar is intended to provide a basic understanding of post-tensioning and is of benefit to anyone who would like to develop a fundamental understanding of post-tensioning design and construction concepts, including structural engineers, contractors, installers, inspectors, architects, project managers, code specifiers, as well as municipal and building officials.
Key concepts, code requirements, examples and practical design and construction tips will be discussed. Highlights of the course include:
Post-Tensioning Technology: Materials, fabrication, installation procedures, common systems and applicable specifications will be described.
Analysis & Design: Key concepts such as load balancing, secondary moments and prestress losses will be explained. Applicable code requirements will be identified and their impact on design discussed.
Applications: Project examples will be presented to illustrate various uses of post-tensioning in buildings as well as how tendons are laid out in common floor systems. The use of external post-tensioning in the retrofit of an existing slab will also be discussed. Facts and myths about post-tensioned as compared to reinforced concrete slabs will also be covered.
Construction: Installation techniques will be explained. Issues related to drawing review, inspection, and interaction with other trades such as electricians and plumbers will be discussed. Other topics include how various structural elements interact with one another in the field as well as construction/coordination issues that may typically arise.
Design of Post-Tensioned Slab-on-Ground Foundations
(8 PDH/0.8 CEU credits)
This comprehensive, in-depth seminar is intended for geotechnical and structural engineers and others involved in the design of post-tensioned slabs-on-ground on expansive soils. The seminar will highlight the new features and changes of the recently published in Addenda to the 3rd Edition of the PTI Design of Post-Tensioned Slabs-on-Ground.
Practical guidance will be given on:
·Evaluating climate and site conditions·
·Determining relevant soil properties·
·Predicting soil movements using the new geotechnical analysis procedure·
·Designing for the controlling criteria of moments, shear and deflection·
·Applying the new cracked section provisions
The seminar will heavily emphasize design practice and will present recommendations for optimizing PT slab designs. Design comparisons and examples will be presented to demonstrate these concepts and the application of the PTI Design method.
PTI offers of a number of certification and training programs in which professionals can enhance their knowledge of bonded and unbonded post-tensioning construction and field installation. Attendees can also take advantage of this training to advance their professional development. PTI issues continuing education credits ranging from 1.2 to 2.0 CEUs depending on the course length. Visit PTI’sCertification page for more information about these training opportunities.
