Training and Certification of Field Personnel for Post-Tensioning (PT)
In addition to plant certification, PTI also offers certification of field personnel shown to comply with requirements of IBC and ACI 318. Proper training and education of personnel involved in post-tensioning field operations—Installers, Inspectors, Engineers, and others—are vital to ensuring the performance, serviceability, and safety of post-tensioned concrete construction. PTI offers several field certification programs with more than 1000 individuals certified each year. PTI offers many resources to aid personnel in obtaining certification. Programs are offered at various locations each year. We also offer training delivered to a location of your choice at special rates. See also Special Request Workshops. To obtain certification, passing an exam with a minimum score of 70% is required, unless otherwise stated.
Level 1 Unbonded PT – Field Installation
This 2-day class outlines the basic body of knowledge that should be possessed by all personnel involved in the installation and inspection of single strand unbonded post-tensioning systems. It also serves as an effective introduction for personnel new to post-tensioning, while at the same time providing support and organization for experienced persons. Level 2 Unbonded PT Inspector
This advanced 2-day class builds on the Level 1 Unbonded PT course and is designed to provide inspectors, building officials, engineers, and industry personnel with the knowledge and capabilities for effective field inspection of single strand unbonded post-tensioning systems. Prerequisite: Completion of Level 1 Unbonded PT – Field Installation certification. To obtain the Level 2 Unbonded PT Inspector certification, an affidavit certifying 500 hours of verifiable PT field experience is required.

Level 2 Unbonded PT Ironworker
This advanced 3-day class builds on the Level 1 Unbonded PT course and is designed to extend the knowledge and capabilities of the field personnel regarding light commercial, residential slab-on-ground, and superstructure PT and requires the student to demonstrate a proficiency of the necessary skills for working with single strand unbonded post-tensioning systems. Prerequisite: Completion of Level 1 Unbonded PT – Field Installation certification. To obtain the Level 2 Unbonded PT Ironworker certification, an affidavit certifying 500 hours of verifiable working field experience in PT is required.

Level 1/2 Bonded PT – Field Installation/Field Specialist
This intensive 3-day training course covers the installation of various types of duct systems, diverse methods for installation of prestressing steel (including strand and bar), stressing equipment operation and procedures, as well as grouting techniques and operation of grouting equipment. To obtain the Level 1 Bonded PT – Field Installation certification, passing the exam with a minimum score of 70% is required.To obtain the Level 2 Bonded PT Field Specialist certification, passing the exam with a minimum score of 80% is required; an affidavit certifying 1500 hours of verifiable field experience, with 500 hours in each of the three categories (installation, stressing, and grouting) is also required.

Workshop Refund Policy
PTI will refund registration fees if cancelled in advance of the workshop as follows: 100% of the fees will be refunded for requests made more than 21 days in advance of the workshop; The fee less an $85 cancellation charge will be refunded for requests made 8 to 21 days in advance; No refunds will be issued for requests made within 7 days of the workshop.

Field Certification must be kept current by successful completion of a renewal exam which emphasizes recent specification changes. PTI now has all Field Certification Programs available for renewal online. These programs include Level 1 Field Fundamentals, Level 2 Inspector, Level 2 Superstructure Ironworker, and Bonded Certification.

Plant Certification Programs
PTI offers two programs for certifying facilities producing materials used in post-tensioning systems:
Certification of Plants Producing Unbonded Single Strand Tendons
- Launched in 1989, the first program, Unbonded Single Strand Tendon Fabrication Facilities, is for facilities that fabricate unbonded single strand tendons. Since its inception, participation in the program has grown steadily. 63 plants are certified, which represents approximately 95% of the industry's production. In 2007, PTI added provisions to permit certification of mobile fabricating facilities in addition to fixed plants. Certification of Plants Producing Prestressed Concrete (PC) Strand
- The second program, PC Strand Plants, launched in 2007 and is for factories that manufacture Prestressed Concrete (PC) Strand. The program includes standardization of reporting practices and documentation, as well as establishes required testing procedures and specified minimum intervals. The certification of a factory under this program indicates that the factory and personnel are capable of producing PC strand in conformance with the program's requirements. To date, six international plants in Asia and the Middle East have been certified and inspections of additional plants are underway.
